We could tell Lil' Row enjoyed the music, city sounds, sound effects, and animal sounds provided on the many apps we've downloaded on her iPad by the various behavioral responses we would get from her: smiling, rapid breathing, head turning, etc...but this new "inchstone" is undeniable proof that her iPad is a remarkable aid in Lil' Rows therapy!!! Not to mention a big ol' boost in mom's "hope department"!! :) Touch and Say by Interbots is our "Latest and Greatest" iPad addition...Row just loves it! And all moms out there should add the Eye Handbook...you'll not find THAT much info for FREE anywhere!!!!!

Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-50315801035130355502011-12-08T17:59:00.000-08:002011-12-08T18:08:07.671-08:00Lil' Row said "Moo" instead of "Boo"!
Lil' Row has had a pretty long few weeks since her surgery...but she is getting better every day! She even managed to "tough it out" on Halloween for a while! She's still not thrilled about being upright...especially in her wheelchair...we're hoping molded seating might help her out some in that department. But she made the cutest COW on the block, and the BIG MAC switch we set up for her to "MOO" with kept her distracted long enough to get mom a Snickers or two! :)Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-31059591375804965812011-10-24T07:19:00.000-07:002011-10-24T07:48:08.399-07:00The Road to Recovery

Well we're back from Cincinatti Childrens Hospital with one unhappy, yet much improved Lil' Row! Dr. Sturm, Row's pediatric orthopedic surgeon was able to straighten her out more than any of us had dared to hope for! She does have some pretty major incisions...two running horizontally across the top of each buttock (one 6 inches and one 8 inches long), and one 9 inch vertical incision going from the base of her neck down the center of her back! Right now they look massive and painful but seem to be healing nicely...and she's young enough that the scars may fade in time...we hope! And her healthcare providers have all assured us that Row's lungs have never sounded clearer!!! YAY!!! Finally, after months of illness and isolation, Lil' Row's on the road to recovery! We know it's gonna be a long road...this had been very traumatic on her small self and we're just now beginning to discover that some of her "inchstones" have sufferd setbacks but we have no doubt Lil' Row will soon recover any skills she may have lost and then some! Time to work on sitting....update again soon!
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-71967640658891017732011-08-14T08:25:00.000-07:002011-08-14T08:45:56.335-07:00End of Summer....Well, this was not Lil' Row's best summer...it began with a 16 day stay in the hospital (9 of those in the PICU), followed by an additional 6 day stay, then an overnight visit, a homebound nurse coming in 2 times a week, and Rowan living in nearly total isolation!!!! She picked up Mycoplasma pneumonia in May which caught us totally by surprise and lead to respiratory failure, a ventilator, pseudomonas pneumonia, sepsis, and enemia! Her recovery has been slow due to the scoliosis which is now measured at 80 degrees! It's been a very difficult few months for Lil' Row and her family...and looks to get worse befor getting better! She is scheduled to undergo a VEPTR implant in early October which ofcourse is major surgery but also neccisary...without it her lungs will grow more and more compressed making this summers bout with pneumonias only the beginning!!! So please cross your fingers for Lil' Row and maybe whisper a prayer or two on her behalf and we'll update her blog as soon and as often as we can! Thanks

She was on her best behavior the entire time...including the car rides down and back! She slept great every night... for a week (which had been one of our primary concerns). She seemed to enjoy everything from swimming and playing in the sand to shopping and bowling...even tasting new foods IN RESTRAUNTS without so much as a whimper! And not once did she throw a fit or shut down! We have concluded it has to have been the "stress free" environment! She could sence that mom and dad were relaxed and so she was relaxed! So glad we decided to take the chance!!!

Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-57921423167286265472011-03-08T05:31:00.000-08:002011-03-08T05:43:53.396-08:00Lowtech Play... Even though Row is an iPad baby now we still make time for some old school play!!!! This is a clip of her trying to grab toys in a bucket of popcorn at Milestones Therapy Clinic ( which we have nicknamed "INCHSTONES") Rowan did so well at this activity that we've made her one for home...two actually...one with popcorn and one with rice! Totally differant textures but both equally as interesting....these make great, inexpensive tactile/sensory tools!
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-48566071587187296542011-02-27T17:10:00.000-08:002011-02-27T17:26:56.260-08:00iPad iNchstones... "Inchstones"...I just adore this term! I've stolen it from a friend who borrowed it from another...I think the reson I like it so well is that for families of special needs children the term "Milestones"
often leads to discouragement and heartache! I believe inchstones best describes how our family...and I'm sure most families with children like Rowan cherish each and every accomplishment...no matter how big or small! This is a clip of one of Rowan's inchstones with the ipad. It shows deliberate and consistant interaction with one of her favorite applications "Look Baby"! Rowan works very hard in this clip and if you will watch closely, with your heart, you will see past her difficulties to the "inchstone" she has accomplished here!!!
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-28728043313273123522011-02-03T09:39:00.000-08:002011-02-03T16:28:53.165-08:00iPad Play
Here's a clip of Row playing one of her favorite iPad apps...I Hear Ewe!!!
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-79668012772834245392011-01-24T13:46:00.000-08:002011-01-24T14:11:19.528-08:00Row's an iPad baby now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We could'nt be more pleased with our decision to get Row an iPad for Christmas!!!! Some of her favorite apps areRattle, Hatch, Peek a Boo Barn, Peek A Boo Wild, I Hear Ewe, Baby Finger, Chimes, Fish School HD, I love Fireworks, Atomic Top, Nursery Jam, Drums, Baby Piano Lite, Instuments Free,Art of Glow, Glow Draw, DoodleBuddy, Story Kit, Cat in the Hat....the list goes on! Almost all of these are interactive and most were either free or under 2 bucks! And this is one tool that will grow with her and help to educate her into adaulthood!!!! We did manage to squeeze in time to get Row something to ride around in. We've searched forever for what we felt we could adapt for Row that would give her the extra vestibular we think she's been needing in the safest manner possible...and we came up with the Pathfinder Radio Flyer Wagon! It can be used as a flatbed wagon for lying or as a one or two seater by way of fold up seats with lap belts! We did add the industrial velcro up the back , and along the sides to hold some make-shift laterals ( borrowed from the Squiggles Activity System by Leckey ) and to hold Row more solidly in place. All in all I think we made a great decision for the price...100 bucks! Beat that in a catalog!
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-68304214303085155202010-11-19T17:06:00.000-08:002010-11-19T17:10:03.174-08:00MMmm!! We've been trying to get Rowan to hold the little fat bodied crayons...and she will...but just for a few seconds and she lacks the strength to put enough pressure on the crayon to make much of a mark. So we slapped some velcro on the bottom of the crayon casing and stuck it to her benik glove. Now she's learning to push the crayon around, allowing its own weight to make the marks!!! She's had several appointments and evaluations, made lots of new friends through Milestones Therapy Clinic, and successfully transitioned into the Cabell County Homebound Preschool Program. YAY!! Earlier in the month we attended a birthday party for one of Rows little friends at an alternative therapy clinic called Tangible Alternatives. One of the favorite activities there was a big pool filled with a wide variety of softly textured stuffed toys. A lot of the children seemed to enjoy the pool...almost as much as the Snoezelen Room! So we thought we'd try something like it at home! Although it is visually busy it's also very soft and quiet. We're hoping it will provide Rowan with a bit of calm after the September storm!
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-12040586091643102432010-08-29T16:57:00.000-07:002010-08-30T05:58:30.246-07:00August Field Trips

This month we took Rowan on two field trips where she met up with her favorite little friends! And very mad! She's never been a fan of "tummy time"...but since the placement of her g tube she flat out hates it. She throws such a horrible fit over the Creepster Crawler (seen on her blog) that we've given some serious thought to alternatives. This is what we've come up with...that was reasonably priced , ofcourse... a hammock purchased at Gander Mountain for $30, and an Iron Man Chin Up Bar purchased at Dicks Sporting Goods for $20. And you have a crawl trainer with a combined weight limit of more than 300lbs. Row can use this, albeit unhappily, for quite a while!
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-87145088401133805612010-08-19T14:15:00.000-07:002010-08-19T14:24:06.592-07:00La La La La!!!

Rowan has had a very busy week this week! We will be bringing along a spotter ofcourse...the additional weight throws off moms center of gravity a bit! Our hopes for the Traveltech are to use the cotinuous movement and shifting weight to help strengthen Rows trunk and neck muscles. Moms too while we're at it! haha
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-43626740162258748162010-08-04T08:34:00.000-07:002010-08-04T09:08:07.859-07:00ABC's and 123's

Rowan has reached the age where most typical children begin preschool! However after much deliberation her father and I have decided she's just not ready! In addition to her daily therapies at home she will receive physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech from a local childrens therapy clinic . We will provide peer socialization through field trips and playdates, and hopefully be able to introduce Row to all of the same info/input she would be exposed to in preschool!
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-76116784561209888342010-07-29T10:44:00.000-07:002010-07-29T11:10:33.698-07:00I Feel Pretty!

We've just introduced Rowan to what the over priced catalogues would call the "Infinity Corner"! Four 5 dollar door mirrors fixed into a corner with a reflective toy suspended from an eye hook in the ceiling above! We also intend to place lighted switch toys on a table in front of Row, and maybe try hanging visually stimulating things from suction cups attached to the mirrors themselves! We hope to encourage Rowan to look at herself and eventually identify the parts of her beautiful little face! Wish us luck...
Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-49369160106907053162010-07-26T16:29:00.000-07:002010-07-26T16:44:19.692-07:00A really great day!

Today was a great day for lil' Row! She tolerated all of her daily activities very well, including tummy time which is her least favorite thing in the world. She also seemed to enjoy our latest addition to messy play time...the sand box. Or in this case sand pool! We've hidden small brightly colored foam shapes, fuzzy balls, red and yellow toy frogs etc. in the sand for visual acuity/ fine motor/ tactile play. We were a bit concerned this might be a little overstimulating for Rowan but she handled it well! Go Row! Now for a BATH!

Lil' Rowanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13982026651761656187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7569785822444796138.post-22314140445278887252010-07-24T14:43:00.000-07:002010-07-24T14:53:47.847-07:00First time...
Well this is day one of lil' Rowans blog...we're all set up n ready to go!
